Vinyl, James Hardie and composite siding compared, plus why soffit, fascia and gutters decide how long any of it lasts.
Siding gets the attention, but the exterior of a house is a system. The cladding sheds water, the soffit and fascia close and ventilate the eave, and the gutters carry the water away from the foundation. Weakness in any one of them shows up as damage in the others.
Vinyl siding is the value option: no painting, a wide colour range and straightforward repairs. James Hardie fiber cement is heavier and more rigid, holds a factory finish for many years, and gives a home the crisp shadow lines of painted wood without the upkeep. Composite products sit between the two and are often chosen for accent gables, board-and-batten details or shake courses.
Whichever product is selected, the underlayment, flashing at penetrations and the trim detail around windows and doors matter as much as the panel itself.
Vented soffit lets air move into the attic and out at the ridge, which keeps the roof deck dry in summer and reduces ice damming in winter. Fascia carries the gutter and closes the rafter tails. Soft or stained fascia almost always means water has been getting behind the gutter, and the repair is easier before the sheathing is affected.
Seamless gutters sized to the roof area, hung with enough pitch and with downspouts that discharge well away from the foundation, prevent most of the wet basement and settling problems homeowners blame on other causes. Replacing siding is the natural time to correct undersized or poorly pitched gutters, because the trim and flashing are already open.
